A Year of Reading: Take Away the A

http://readingyear.blogspot.com/

I have a book at home that I just love. In this book, they have taken a real word, changed a single letter, and created a new word. For example, a "pugeon" is a fat bird.  I read it often for the humor of the vocabulary wordplay.

I found this book initially on the "A Year of Reading" blog referenced above, and immediately fell in love. It's pretty much a children's version of the same thing, but with all "real" words. The premise is that there are a host of words that "become" other words by changing a single letter.  Here's a sample from the first few pages:

by Michaƫl Escoffier (Author), Kris Di Giacomo (Illustrator)

"Without the A
the BEAST is BEST.

Without the B
the BRIDE goes for a RIDE.

Without the C
the CHAIR has HAIR."

WOW! What could your class of first or second graders DO with a book like that? Just THINK of all the class book variations they could come up with!

What could you include in your "Work on Writing" Daily 5 station with this as a premise?

Daily 5 Blog Book Study, Ch 1-2

I could never hope to produce a book study blog as dynamic as this one, so why re-invent the wheel instead of giving credit where credit is due?

Those of you looking to newly implement the Daily 5, or improve your implementation, do I have news for you!

The Seusstastic Classroom Inspirations blog is conducting a summer book study of Daily 5, 2nd Edition. Here, for reading pleasure and edification, are chapters 1 and 2. You'll have to buy the book yourself to follow along, but the tips and insights and classroom pictures are all here for you!

Here are some of the discussion points (just to pique your interest):
1. What are "barometer" children?
2. How do you assess/build stamina in your students?
3. How should Daily 5 be introduced that first week of school?
4. How long will it take to get Daily 5 up and running?

Click and try it out! The link below should take you directly to the Chap 1-2 book study entry!
